Sophie Devine of New Zealand created history in the Women’s Big Bash League 2020/21 tournament during the match between Perth Scorchers and Melbourne Renegades. Devine, who is considered one of the best all-rounders in women’s cricket, smashed 77 and hit three sixes in her knock as Perth Scorchers defeated Melbourne Renegades by nine wickets and with 31 balls to spare. However, during the course of her knock, Devine created history as she became the first woman batter to hit 100 sixes in the Women’s Big Bash League. Devine has played 74 matches in the WBBL and now she has a total of 101 sixes to her name. She has scored 2,433 runs in the WBBL at an average of 39.88 with her highest score being an unbeaten 103. In the WBBL, Devine has 15 scores of fifty-plus and she has also scored centuries two times in the competition.

Devine is comfortably ahead of the pack and it will take a lot of catching up for the other players. Ashleigh Gardner of Sydney Sixers has the second most number of 6s in WBBL as she has 63 sixes to her credit while Alyssa Healy (48), who plays for Sydney Sixers is in the third spot. Perth Scorchers chose to bowl and they immediately dominated with some magnificent bowling led by Taneale Peschel who took 2/17. Melbourne Renegades made sluggish progress and with captain Amy Satterthwaite scoring 48, it was at a strike-rate of under 100 and they struggled to 122/3.

Sophie Molineux dismissed Beth Mooney cheaply but Devine and Chloe Piparo shared a 101-run stand to flatten the Melbourne Renegades as they won by a comfortable margin, with Devine creating a new record.

Brisbane win, Sydney Sixers shocked

Brisbane Heat, the two-time Women’s Big Bash League winners and defending champions, continued their good run with a tense 14-run win against Adelaide Strikers in Drummoyne Oval, Sydney.

Laura Harris blasted four fours and three sixes in her 17-ball 41 while the rest of the batters struggled to help the Brisbane Heat reach 136/7. Amanda Wellington was the star for the Adelaide Strikers with 4/24 but Grace Harris matched her with 4/16. Despite Tahlia McGrath’s brilliant 52 and some aggressive batting from Stafanie Taylor, Adelaide Strikers fell short.

At the Sydney Showground Stadium, Sydney Sixers were boosted by a brilliant knock of 72 from Ellyse Perry as they notched up 139/4. Despite losing Naomi Stalenberg cheaply, Rachel Priest and Hayley Matthews showed their class. Priest blasted 15 fours and a six in her unbeaten knock of 92 while Hayley Mathews smashed 41 as Hobart Hurricanes stormed to a nine-wicket win thanks to a solid partnership of 125.
