South Africa's Kagiso Rabada may miss rest of the matches of the Test series against Australia after he was hit with level two offence following his aggressive send-off of Australian captain Steve Smith on Friday.

Rabada had screamed in Smith's face and then made contact with a shoulder bump after dismissing the Australian skipper. While it looked an innocuous bump, it invited the prospect of an ICC inquiry.

Rabada will need to prove contact with Smith wasn't intentional if he is to play again in this series. Rabada entered this series with an ominous two-Test ban hanging over his head.

The findings of that inquiry were handed down before play on day two on Saturday, with Rabada hit with a grade two offence for physical contact with the shoulder.

The charge typically carries with it three demerit points, which would take Rabada to eight in total in the past 12 month period - triggering a two-Test ban, which would rule him out of the rest of the series with Australia.

Rabada will contest the ban in a hearing after play on Saturday - but in order to avoid a series-ending suspension, he will need to prove the contact was accidental.

Here's the incident:

Rabada currently has five demerit points to his name, having picked up a third sanction by the ICC in the past 12 months with his send off of India’s Shikhar Dhawan in the fifth match of their one-day series last month.

Rabada was fined 15 per cent of his match fee and handed one demerit point for conduct during fifth ODI against India.

Rabada was reported for an incident that happened in the eighth over of India’s innings. Rabada, after dismissing Shikhar Dhawan, waved at the departing batsman and also had made a comment.
