One of the biggest talking points after India's triumph at the ICC Under-19 World Cup 2018 was head coach Rahul Dravid's unhappiness with regards to the income disparity between him and his support staff.

Dravid, always regarded as a man of great character, had hinted it was unfair that he was being paid more than the rest of the coach staff of India's victorious Under-19 team.

When the India Under-19 contingent returned from New Zealand in the first week of February, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had declared that Dravid would be rewarded with a prize of Rs 50 lakh, the players would be given 30 lakh each, and the members of the support would get Rs 20 lakh each.

As it turns out, though, Dravid's request has been heard by the Indian cricket board. According to a report by The Indian Express, the BCCI has has decided to give every member of the coaching staff, including Dravid, a sum of Rs 25 lakh as reward. Not just this, every person who was part of the India Under-19 team's year-long preparation for the World Cup will also be given the same amount. This means the family of former team trainer Rajesh Sawant, who passed away in 2017, will also receive the money.

“From the time the award was announced, Dravid wasn’t happy with him getting much more than others. He informed the Board that he felt that every member had played an equal role in the team winning the World Cup. It surprised many in the BCCI that he was ready to take a cut in his own earning,” a Board member told a Daily on condition of anonymity.

The people who will now get the reward of Rs 25 lakh are - Rahul Dravid, Paras Mhambrey, Abhay Sharma, Yogesh Parmar, Anand Date, Mangesh Gaikwad, Devraj Raut, WV Raman, Manuj Sharma, Sumeet Malahapurkar , Amogh Pandit, and the family of late trainer Rajesh Savant.

Addressing a press conference on returning from New Zealand, after winning the ICC U-19 World Cup, Dravid had said he credited the success of the team to the entire support staff which had worked hard behind the scenes. Though he did not express his resentment openly, he had gently pointed out the disparity.

After the World Cup win, Dravid had acknowledged the role of support staff. “It’s a bit embarrassing at times because I tend to get a lot of attention and focus, but it is really about the support staff and the quality of people that we’ve had. I don’t want to mention names but everyone in the support staff has put in a great effort. We do the best for the kids.”

Dravid receives Rs 4 crore annually for a 3-year-contract with the Indian junior and A teams.
