Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore endured yet another poor tournament in IPL 2020 as they crashed out in the Eliminator clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad. This prolonged their wait for a trophy to one more year and it also increased Virat Kohli’s trophy-less run as captain ever since he took charge of the captaincy in IPL 2013. The result of IPL 2020 saw some reactions, with former India batsman and Kolkata Knight Riders captain Gautam Gambhir saying that Virat Kohli should quit captaincy. Gambhir cited the example of how people like Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni has made a difference to their sides as skipper.

However, former India batsman and cricket commentator Aakash Chopra has disagreed with Gautam Gambhir and said Virat Kohli cannot be held responsible for the situation in Royal Challengers Bangalore.

“Gautam Gambhir believes that it is the nation’s misfortune if Rohit Sharma is not made the Indian T20I captain because he is the most successful captain in the IPL. But I have a question that if Rohit was given the RCB team, which is there with Kohli, will he have won two, three or four out of the five titles MI have won?Rohit as a captain is outstanding, I love him to bits but can the Mumbai Indians’ success story be equated with India, that is my question. Just because Kohli’s team does not do well, does it mean that is Kohli’s fault,” Aakash Chopra said on his Facebook page.

Can’t give captaincy on IPL success

Aakash Chopra also stated that although Rohit Sharma is great and his captaincy has been the ultimate difference in Mumbai Indians becoming one of the greatest teams in the Indian Premier League, one cannot just give the captaincy of the India cricket team purely on the success of the IPL.

“They cannot make him the captain now, however much you may try. I know it is not fair, I know it is tough but this is what it is. It cannot happen now as there is a simple reason for that. There are not too many T20 matches at the moment. Let us wait for some time, let us be cool, he cannot become the captain now. Kohli is the captain currently and I don't feel that there is going to be a captaincy change in this team now,” Chopra added.

Mumbai Indians cemented their reputation as one of the greatest sides in the IPL after winning the title for the fifth time by beating Delhi Capitals in the final of IPL 2020. This was Rohit Sharma’s sixth IPL title, having won in 2009 as a player for Deccan Chargers. India will play three ODIs and three Twenty20 Internationals in Australia starting from November. Rohit Sharma will miss the limited overs series due to a hamstring injury while Virat Kohli will leave the tour after the Pink Ball Test in Adelaide to be with his wife Anushka Sharma for the birth of his child.
