Chasing 321, Australia fell short of 40 runs in the third and final One-Day International (ODI) against South Africa on Sunday.

While this marked a 2-1 series win for the Proteas, it saw one of the lowest points in the Australian cricket in a format they have ruled for decades.

No other team has clinched five ICC Cricket World Cup titles, which includes a hat-trick of wins in the 50-over multi-country tournament.

Keeping that in mind, Australia's results in 2018 are nothing but ironic. Out of the 13 ODIs, they played this year, the Aussies managed to win just two and lost the rest.

In 2018, Australia played three bilateral series - two five-match series against England and a three-ODI series against South Africa and they lost all the three.

Australia's two ODI wins out of 13 matches played has marked their fewest ODI wins in a calendar year since 1978.

Making it worse, Australia have suffered their worst ODI win percentage in a calendar year (15%). In addition to that, they currently have the worst ODI win percentage of any country in 2018.

With a loss in the home series against South Africa on Sunday, Australia now for the first time have lost five consecutive ODI series.
