In a Deja Vu moment for Graeme Smith or Proteas fans, Cricket South Africa appointed 23-year-old batsman Aiden Markram as the stand-in captain for the remaining ODIs against Team India.

Taking to their Twitter account, the cricketing body shared an image of Markram with the caption, "Congratulations to @AidzMarkram who has been appointed as stand-in captain for the remainder of the @Momentum_za series against India. All the best #SAvIND #ProteaFire."

Markram will replace Faf du Plessis, who injured his right index finger during the first ODI at Sahara Stadium Kingsmead on Thursday.

Further assessment and investigation revealed a fracture which will require three-six weeks to heal.

He will undergo a period of rest and rehabilitation with the aim of being fit for the first Sunfoil Test match against Australia starting in Durban on March 1.

The selectors have included Farhaan Behardien as Du Plessis' replacement, with Multiply Titans wicket-keeper batsman, Heinrich Klaasen, earning his maiden ODI call-up as a reserve wicket-keeper in the squad.

Markram, at the press conference, confirmed that he will bat at no 3 in the batting order.

He has only played two ODIs for South Africa but he is the only Proteas captain who has won a World Cup when he led the Under-19 team in 2014.
