Heavy rains brought Mumbai to a virtual standstill on Tuesday, flooding streets, causing transport chaos as dozens of flights and local train services were cancelled. Mumbaikars breathed a sigh of relief as there were no more heavy rains on Wednesday.
However, people living in low lying areas of the city woke up with a new problem- the toxic water entering their homes. The deluge on Tuesday brought toxic water and waste directly to these home. Sachin Tendulkar highlighted the plight of these victims in a post on social media.
“Imagine toxic water from the Deonar dumping grounds collecting in your home. That, muck and stench is what the people of Shivaji Nagar have been living with since yesterday’s deluge,” wrote Tendulkar on Instagram.
He urged citizens to do their bit in the time of need.
At least five people have been killed in Mumbai due to acidents related to heavy rains.
