A few years ago, the then Rajasthan Cricket Academy’s director Greg Chappell had dismissed the ability of a precocious boy and asked him to dream of something else but cricket. But a soothsayer had predicted the latter’s Team India debut in 2018.

Medium-pacer Deepak Chahar set aside everything and worked as hard as one could and today he has got his due - Team India call for playing T20s in the ongoing England tour. After a good run in the IPL and India A tour of England, Deepak finally got Indian cap and made Rajasthan proud.

Today the fortune-teller must be beaming with happiness as he happens to be his father. His prediction seems so obvious as only a fool would ignore a player who had a phenomenal domestic debut in 2010-11 where he steamrolled Hyderabad with his ability to swing the ball both ways. The right-arm seamer notched up intimidating figures of 8 for 10 at the SMS Stadium to help Rajasthan win. He always had the spark that got official recognition when the Indian stalwart MS Dhoni made him a part of Chennai Super Kings. Leading CSK’s attack he made sure to repay the faith his IPL captain had reposed in him and he succeeded with flying colours.

This was the moment that got the commentary boxes resonating with his name as renowned cricket pundits starting talking about the player who represented Rajasthan.

The boy, who hails from Agra, has had endured his fair share of injuries and struggle to be the Team Rajasthan’s spearhead bowler, but it was this struggle that put things in perspective for him and has made him the cricketer he is today. Deepak is well-aware of his potential and given that he is very confident as well, he too like his father knew what was coming.

The day he was picked up by CSK during IPL 2018 auction he nonchalantly said, “I slept pretty well as I was confident that I will be picked up if not necessarily by CSK. Actually during Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy Gautam Gambhir had told me that he will try to have me in whichever team he will play for and also Yuvraj Singh praised my bowling and said I have potential to play for Team India. So I was confident that I will not go unsold. The best part is that Dhoni will give me appropriate number of games to play as he is well aware of the fact that apart from bowling I can be useful as a pinch hitter.”
