Former captain and coach Ravi Shastri on Tuesday decided to rattle the Indian cricket board’s three-member Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) by finally applying for the post of India’s head coach.

Said to be enjoying the backing of captain Virat Kohli, Shastri now emerges as the favourite to take over as the next coach of India.

Shastri’s application has added drama to the ongoing ‘finding next coach’ saga, as his known opponent Sourav Ganguly remains the most vocal personality of the CAC.

“From the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) point of view, CAC will have the final word on coach selection. I can’t comment more,” said board’s acting secretary Amitabh Choudhary.

Shastri was the director of the Indian team between 2014 and 2016. During his tenure India reached the semifinals of the World Cup in 2015, won the Test series in Sri Lanka after a gap of 22 years, and outplayed South Africa 3-0 in a four-Test home series before clinching the Asia Cup.

However, Shastri’s association with the team ended when the CAC chose their former colleague Anil Kumble over Shastri.

The matter didn’t end there as both Shastri and Ganguly went on to trade words in public. That’s why Shastri was said to be apprehensive about applying for the job.

Shastri, however, has denied that he wanted a direct entry as coach without having to go through the process of meeting Ganguly. However, Kohli’s “approval of his style of functioning” is said crto have forced him to rethink.
