Aditya Tare has been an experienced customer. Mumbai needed one like him when they were four down for 28 against Gujarat on Day 3 of their Ranji Trophy tie here at the Wankhede.

Tare has played First Class cricket for 11 years and there could not have been a better player than the wicket-keeper batsman to do the rescue act for Mumbai.

However, Tare’s form had been  iffy  since last season. Off the six matches and 11 innings, he had just scored 237 runs with three fifties. The senior player needed form on his side more than anything else. He recently scored a 100 not out in an inconsequential second innings against Railways after a match-winning 71 in a List A Vijay Hazare final.

Friday was a perfect occasion for the 31-year-old to remind critics that he is far from over with a well made 59 (114b, 8x4, 1x6) in his 193 minute stay at the crease in a crunch situation. The ice cool Tare was calm and composed in his approach like how Mumbai needed one at that moment.

His crucial 57-run stand with Shivam Dubey not only helped Mumbai come out of the rut, but also gave a purposeful lead of 172 run.

“I am pretty happy about what I have achieved in my career. I had one slack season last year which I cannot deny. I always believed I’m a very good player but I will bounce back. That’s what I’m trying to do. I will bounce back for myself and for my team,” Tare said after the third day’s play.

When asked if he has struggled for two years, Tare said: “Not for two years. 2016-17 we reached the finals, I scored four 50s in the knockout round. I’m the player who always does well in the knockouts.”

So was there any kind of pressure coming into this game? “No. Personally no pressure on me as such.”

Summing up the day’s play where Mumbai struggled for most part, Tare said, “Tough cricket. We are under the pump at the moment.

“At the moment it looks like an outright win game with Gujarat having an upper hand. But we will have to bowl out of our skins,” he said.
