Top-order batsman Mayank Agarwal became the second Indian opener ever on Friday (February 21) to survive the first session of a Test match in New Zealand.

Mayank achieved this feat on day one of India's first Test match against the Blackcaps at Basin Reserve in Wellington.

With this, the 29-year-old replicated Manoj Prabhakar's efforts for India back in 1990 against the Kiwis.

Earlier in the day, New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson won the toss and invited India to bat first.

Tim Southee struck early for the Blackcaps as he removed Prithvi Shaw (16) with an excellent outswinger.

Cheteshwar Pujara (11) and skipper Virat Kohli (2) were also sent back to the dressing room soon after by pacer Kyle Jamieson on his Test debut for the Kiwis.

At lunch, India were 79/3 after 28 overs with Agarwal and Ajinkya Rahane knitting together a decent partnership.

However, Kiwi pacer Trent Boult struck right away after play resumed for the second session at the windy Wellington and sent Mayank back to the dressing room.

The Indian opener scored 34 runs off 84 deliveries and is currently the top scorer so far for India on the day.
