New Zealand leg-spinner Todd Astle’s tour of India has come to a halt after bowling just three deliveries in the first warm-up game against Board President’s XI at the Cricket Club of India on Tuesday, October 17.

Astle, 31, suffered a tear on the right side of his groin during that game, ruling him out of action for three weeks. He has been replaced in the ODI squad by 24-year-old leg-spinner Ish Sodhi, who was originally named only for the T20 leg of the series that follows the ODIs. New Zealand coach Mike Hesson said it was cruel timing for Astle.

“Todd was really impressive in the recent New Zealand ‘A’ tour over here and had done everything he possibly could to get himself ready for this series,” said Hesson.

Astle took six wickets at 27.83 in four matches for New Zealand ‘A’ against India ‘A’ in Visakhapatnam before joining the senior team in Mumbai for the ODI series. Astle has yet to make his ODI debut while he has turned out for New Zealand in two Tests and as many T20Is for a combined tally of just one wicket. Sodhi, on the other hand, played in two one-dayers in Vizag for a costly average of 43.5 overs.

However, Sodhi has the experience of playing in India, having been part of the series in India last year, returning with an average of 38 in three ODIs and playing in the Kanpur Test, which was India’s 500th. However, it is Sodhi has done his best in India in the T20Is, ending with 10 wickets at an average of 12 in the ICC World T20 in early 2016.

New Zealand will hope that Sodhi will translate his T20 form in India into the limited-overs should he be considered in the playing 11 in any of the three ODIs in Mumbai (October 22), Pune (October 27) and Kanpur (October 29).
