While the Indian Test team suffered a 4-1 loss in England, India’s former captain MS Dhoni has been spending some quality time off duty back at home in Ranchi.

Dhoni was a part of India’s limited-overs squad that won the three-match Twenty20 International (T20I) series against the hosts before they lost the One-Day International (ODI) series. Dhoni returned to India post that as Virat Kohli and Co geared up for the big five-Test series.

When India toured England in 2014, even then they had lost the Test series but Dhoni had ensured his team clinched the ODI series, especially when they were coming off the World Cup victory at home.

Dhoni, by far, has been India’s best captain across formats. He still remains the only Indian captain to win all the ICC trophies – World T20, Champions trophy and World Cup and he also led India to the No. 1 rank in Test cricket.

His ingenious mind always was a weapon against the opponents and there were a very few instances when one could decode his thinking process. In 2014, he didn’t spare his country as well. In between India’s tour of Australia, he announced retirement from Test cricket, making way for Kohli to take over the charge. But, Dhoni continued to lead India in the shorter formats.

Almost two years later, at the beginning of 2017, he shocked his fans once again and this time, it was a bigger deal because Dhoni, India’s best-ever limited-overs captain, stepped down from the ODI/T20I captaincy as well.

That sudden move left several questions as to why did Dhoni make that call all of a sudden?

Recently, Dhoni spoke at a motivational event conducted by the Central Industrial Security Force which was held at the Birsa Munda Airport in Ranchi on Wednesday. He finally opened up on why he stepped down from limited-overs’ captaincy.

“I resigned from captaincy because I wanted the new captain (Virat Kohli) to get enough time for preparing a team before the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019.

Selecting a strong team without giving the new captain (Virat Kohli) appropriate time isn’t possible. I believe that I left the captaincy at the right time”, the veteran said.
