Things got even worse for Australia in the test series against South Africa as stand-in captain Tim Paine suffered a hairline fracture on his right thumb during play on day two of the fourth test.

Paine copped a painful blow during play on day two, the Australian camp confirmed. However, Paine will resume his innings on five when play begins on day three and continue to play in the game 'as planned'.

Paine was hit while keeping up to stumps to Chadd Sayers on Saturday.

This is more bad news for Australia who are in the midst of a leadership crisis after the sackings of Steve Smith and David Warner as captain and vice-captain respectively. They don't even have a vice-captain for the match.

Paine's has a history of injuries on on his right hand. His right index finger was broken after being struck by Dirk Nannes in a 2010. The injury required seven rounds of surgery and almost ended Paine's career.

He still has eight pins, a metal plate and a piece of hip bone in the finger that rarely feels right when he's keeping.

On Saturday, South Africa's Temba Bavuma was left stranded on 95 not out as the hosts tightened their grip over scandal-hit Australia after reducing the hapless visitors to 110 for six at the close on the second day of the fourth and final test on Saturday.

Aided by Bavuma's brilliance, South Africa posted 488 in their first innings and lead by a massive 378 runs at the Wanderers as they seek a first home series win over the Australians in almost 50 years.

The controversial tour looks to be coming to a meek end for the visitors in a game they need to win to share the series. Paine (5) and Pat Cummins (7) will resume on the third day facing a daunting task.
