David Warner instructed Cameron Bancroft to use sandpaper to artificially alter the condition of the ball.

Warner is being called 'plotter-in-chief' in the ball-tampering scandal after it was reported that he developed the "plan to attempt to artificially alter the condition of the ball". CA's investigation into the incident in Cape Town has revealed that while Steve Smith and Cameron Bancroft knew what they were getting into but it was Warner who developed the plan.

According to cricket.com.au, the investigation found Warner conceived the idea to rough up the ball with sandpaper, enlisted Bancroft to carry out the task and demonstrated how to do it.

Warner also failed to report any knowledge of the plan at any time and misled the ICC match officials.

It has also been revealed that Cameron Bancroft falsely claimed that he used sticky tape in ball tampering.

After being caught by television cameras using sandpaper rough up the ball, Bancroft had said that he used sticky tape with granules of the pitch attached to rough up the ball.

"We had a discussion during the break and I saw an opportunity to use some tape, get some granules from rough patches on the wicket to change the ball condition,” Bancroft had said on Saturday. “It didn't work, the umpires didn't change the ball."

David Warner will never be considered for captaincy after serving his one-year ban, Cricket Australia announced on Wednesday.

Smith still has a slim chance to captain Australia again but Warner will not be considered at all.

"Steve Smith and Cameron Bancroft will not be considered for team leadership positions until a minimum of 12 months after the conclusion of their respective suspensions from international and domestic cricket," said CA in a statement.

"Any consideration of future leadership would be conditional on acceptance by fans and the public, form and authority among the playing group. David Warner will not be considered for team leadership positions in the future," it added.

Warner has also been charged for instructing "a junior player to carry out a plan to take steps to attempt to artificially alter the condition of the ball using sandpaper".

Earlier today, CA handed one-year bans to Smith and Warner, and nine months to Bancroft. The scandal also cost Smith and Warner participation in the upcoming IPL.

The ICC, on its part, had suspended Smith for one Test while docking 75 percent of Bancroft's match fees.
