The Indian cricket team were known for the short format games, but when it came to longer formats, India became a strong Test side under the leadership of Sourav Ganguly.

Dada helped India conquer the Test domain when they won matches outside the sub-continent.

The dominance continued under Rahul Dravid when India won its first Test match in South Africa and was even victorious in the West Indies and England.

Under MS Dhoni, India started winning big at home. While the team suffered a series of losses abroad, under Dhoni the home record saw him become the most successful Indian Test captain with 27 Test wins.

Now Dhoni's successor Virat Kohli has become a formidable force not just as an individual player but also as a captain. He made the Indian side a tough opponent both at home and away.

Now, the skipper - who is known for breaking records - is eyeing Dhoni's historical record.

With 26 wins from 46 matches, Kohli features among the elite captain's list with the highest win percentage in Test cricket.

India's most successful Test captain:

Player Played Won
MS Dhoni 60 27
Virat Kohli 46 26
Sourav Ganguly 49 21
Mohammad Azharuddin 47 14
Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi 40 9

When the Men in Blue take the field at the North Sound on Thursday, Kohli will be looking to equal Dhoni’s captaincy feat and become the joint-most successful Test captain ever for India.

As an individual player, Kohli currently has 43 centuries in the 50-over format and is just behind Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar. He is also currently the number one ranked batsman in both the ODI and Test format.

The 30-year old in the recently concluded ODI series against West Indies became the first batsman to score 20,000 international runs in a decade.
