Shikhar Dhawan scored a hundred while Virat Kohli made 82 as India beat Sri Lanka by nine wickets in the opening cricket One-day International of the five- match series in Dambulla on Sunday. India chased down the target of 217 runs in just 28.4 overs.
Earlier, Sri Lanka were bundled out for just 216 after losing the toss and put in bat first. Opener Niroshan Dickwella top scored for the hosts with his 64-run knock while left-arm spinner Axar Patel took three wickets for 34 runs for India. Sri Lankan batting collapsed after a great start which saw them tumbling from 139 for one at one time to 216 all out.
With the Test series ending in a clean sweep in the tourists' favour, skipper Virat Kohli would want his team to keep the foot on the pedal in the limited-overs leg of the tour as well.
For the hosts, the series is a good opportunity to give a better account of themselves and secure automatic qualification for the ICC World Cup 2019.
