Mohammed Shami became the fastest Indian bowler to 100 One-Day Internationa (ODI) wickets on Wednesday.

The pacer reached the landmark during the first ODI between India and New Zealand at the McLean Park, Napier.

Shami, who took 56 ODIs to get to 100 wickets, bettered Irfan Pathan's 59 matches.

Here is a list of Indian bowlers with fewer matches to 100 ODI wickets:

Mohammed Shami - 56 matches

Irfan Pathan - 59 matches

Zaheer Khan - 65 matches

While Shami equalled New Zealand pacer Trent Boult (56 ODIs) in his record of fastest Indian to 100 ODI wickets, he surpassed Pakistan's legend Waqar Younis (59 ODIs) and South African spinner Imran Tahir (58 ODIs).

In the second over of the day, Shami bowled an inswinger and as Guptill tried to hit it with hard hards, he only managed an inside edge that landed on his stumps.

Shami struck again in his second over when his indipper beat the opener, Colin Munro. The Kiwi batsman didn't move as he tried to drive in the gap between his bat and ball before getting bowled.

Earlier, New Zealand won the toss and opted to bat against India on Wednesday.

Both wrist spinners - Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal - figured in the India playing XI, apart from all-rounder Vijay Shankar. Dinesh Karthik has been dropped at the expense of Ambati Rayudu, while Kedar Jadhav retained his place.

Mitchell Santner and Doug Bracewell returned for New Zealand.
