England captain Joe Root won the toss and elected to bat first in the fifth Test against India at The Oval in London on Friday. This was the fifth toss in a row that Indian captain Virat Kohli lost in the series.

"I think the only way I can win the toss is if there are heads on both sides of the coin," Kohli said with a wry smile.

Hanuma Vihari was included in India's playing XI, becoming the 292nd player to represent India in Tests. The middle-order batsman was included in place of Hardik Pandya.

The only other change in the Indian XI was Ravindra Jadeja taking the place of Ravichandran Ashwin. The left-arm spinner will be playing his first match of the series as Ashwin is yet to recover from a hip injury.
