India defeated Australia by seven wickets in the fifth and final ODI to win the series 4-1 on Sunday at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Ground in Nagpur. India reached the target of 243 in the 43rd over as Rohit Sharma scored his 14th ODI hundred while Ajinkya Rahane notched up another half century.

Rohit and Ajinkya added 124 runs for the first wicket as the Indian openers put up century stand for the third consecutive time. Rahane fell to Nathan Coulter-Nile after scoring 61 and in the process bringing up his fourth straight half-century.

Rohit completed 6,000 runs in one-day cricket  and went to score his 14th ODI century. He brought it up with a massive six over mid-wicket against paceman Nathan Coulter-Nile.

Sharma and Kohli (39) added 99 in their second wicket partnership to take India to the brink of victory.

Sharma departed for 125 trying to hit Adam Zampa for a big one. The stylish right-handed batsman, who had scored 71 and 65 in the last two matches, hit 11 fours and five sixes in his 109-ball knock.

Virat also fell in the same over with 16 runs to win. But Manish Pandey and Kedar Jadhav brought India home easily.

Earlier, Australia made 242 for the loss of 9 wickets in their 50 overs after Steve Smith chose to bat first.

The visitors were given a good start again by openers Aaron Finch and David Warner. The two added 100 runs for the first wicket before Finch fell to Hardik Pandya.

Australia then lost their way as three more wickets fell in quick intervals. Captain Steve Smith was the next to go falling to Kedar Jadhav.

Axar Patel then sent back David Warner and Peter Handscomb in two overs to reduce Australia to 118 for 4.

Marcus Stoinis and Travis Head then added 87 runs for the fifth wicket to bring Australia back in the game. However, both got out in quick succession, just into the final overs, as Australia failed to score big in the last 10 overs.

Matthew Wade scored a six off Bhuvneshwar Kumar but fell to Bumrah attempting another one. James Faulkner was run out in the last over. Bhuvneshwar earned a wicket off the final ball of the innings.

The visitors managed only 52 runs in the final 10 overs.

Axar Patel picked up three wickets while Jasprit Bumrah got two wickets for the hosts.

The fifth ODI was a dead rubber but India needed to win the match reclaim their No. 1 ODI ranking. India went back to their frontline pacers - Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah- after having tried Umesh Yadav and Mohammed Shami for just one match. India had to do without the ill Yuzvendra Chahal, who was replace by Kuldeep Yadav.

For Australia, Kane Richardson was unwell and James Faulkner returned to take his place.
