Police verification in Punjab has unfolded a controversial truth about Indian Twenty20 International (T20I) captain and Arjuna awardee Harmanpreet Kaur.

She is likely to lose her job as deputy superintendent of police (DSP) in Punjab as the police verification has found her graduation degree to be fake. Harmanpreet, who hails from Moga, a city in Punjab, joined police on March 1.

According to reports, the police department has sent the proposal to the home department headed by chief minister Amarinder Singh, saying that Harmanpreet could not continue as a DSP because of the lack of a genuine graduation degree.

Confirming the issue, DGP (administration) MK Tiwari said, “Harmanpreet had produced the graduation degree conferred on her purportedly by the Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut. When the commandant of the Punjab Armed Police in Jalandhar sent the degree for verification, the Meerut University replied that this registration number does not exist.”

When Harmanpreet was contacted about this case, the Indian cricketer said,” I don’t know who has told you this. Waise to aisa kuch ha nahi (There is nothing like this).”

When she was asked when did she complete her graduation and in which subjects, and whether her degree was genuine, she refused to reply and said, “I can only talk to you after talking to my department.”

Co-incidentally, this was the first such case reported by Punjab Police. In February, Amarinder had ordered removal of the 2010-Commonwealth Games gold medallist and two-time Asian Games (2010 and 2014) gold medalist in 4 x 400 m relay Mandeep Kaur from DSP’s post.

She was appointed for the post in 2016. Apparently, Mandeep had submitted her graduation degree supposedly acquired from an institute recognised by the Sikkim University. But the state police verification had found that Mandeep had never been a student under the Sikkim University.
