MS Dhoni retired from Test cricket at the end of 2014 in between of India’s then tour of Australia. He played 90 Tests for India and scored 4,876 runs at an average of 38.09.

The former Indian skipper had six tons and 33 fifties under his belt, while he had clinched 256 catches and affected 38 stumpings in his nine-year-old Test career.

Following his retirement from the longest format, India turned towards Bengal cricketer Wriddhiman Saha. However, due to a serious injury prior to the England tour, Indian team included the likes of Dinesh Karthik and young Rishabh Pant in the Test squad.

However, after playing Karthik in the first two Tests and watching him fail, the Indian team turned towards the 21-year-old Pant.

So far, Pant has played five Tests – three in England and two at home against the West Indies – and he already has surpassed India’s prolific wicketkeeper-batsman Dhoni.

Pant has edged past Dhoni in the number of runs scored after first five Tests. The Delhi cricketer has scored 346 runs at an average of 43.25 from his first five Tests while Dhoni had scored 297 runs in the identical number of matches.

Compared to the first Test in Rajkot, the Indian batsmen had it tougher against the West Indies pace attack comprising Jason Holder and Shanon Gabriel in the second game in Hyderabad. India were put under a little bit of pressure in their first innings before Pant and Ajinkya Rahane steadied the ship with a 152-run partnership.

"Jinx has been batting really well, he got runs in Nottingham and we won the Test. He wanted runs under the belt. His partnership with Pant is something we want to see more of," said Indian Captain Virat Kohli.

"If you look at the three new guys (Vihari in England, Shaw, and Pant) who've come in, they've grabbed their opportunities. I think all these things are a big positive,” Kohli added.
