Rain played a key role during India's 1st ODI match against West Indies on Thursday which was called off due to poor weather conditions after the end of 13 overs.

Upon winning the toss, Indian skipper Virat Kohli decided to field first and sent the Windies to bat first after the rain caused a delay in the start and the match was cut short to 43 overs in Guyana.

Chris Gayle and Evin Lewis got off to a pretty slow start against the likes of Mohammad Shami, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and K Khaleel Ahmed.

West Indies were 42/0 at the end of the first 10 overs. This was Gayle's 299th ODI match for his country.

But the game got interrupted during the 5th over as the ground started receiving heavy drizzle and the covers came on.

After a short interval, the match resumed and Virat Kohli finally got what he was looking for from his bowlers.

Gayle's innings on the day never really got going as the 39-year-old was soon dismissed by Chinaman spinner Kuldeep Yadav for just 4 runs after facing 31 deliveries.

But soon at the end of the 13th over, play got interrupted by rain again and this time it was even worse.

Evin Lewis scored 40* off 36 delivers with his partner Shai Hope scoring 6* off 11 deliveries.

After an hour-long wait, the officials finally decided to call off the match due to bad weather as India's first out of three ODI matches against West Indies came to an ugly and quick end with the scoreline showing 54/1.

Indian bowlers were particular precise with the ball with Kumar's 4-11-0, Shami's 3-5-0, Yadav's 2-3-1 and Jadeja's 1-6-0 helped India maintain momentum against the Men In Maroon.

Young Khaleel Ahmed was the only bowler who was a bit expensive with the ball (3-27-0) on the day.

The second ODI between the two nations will be played in Port of Spain on Sunday.
