The Board for Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has extended timeline for submission of applications for the post of 'Head Coach' for men's cricket team till July 9, it was reported on Friday evening.

The announcement comes days after Anil Kumble stepped down from his position as head coach just before India, led by captain Virat Kohli embarked on a tour of the Caribbean for five ODIs and a T20.

Kumble, in his parting statement, has said Kohli had reservations about his coaching 'style' and there partnership was untenable as he did not accompany the side in the ongoing tour to the West Indies.

The BCCI has decided to invite more applications for the post of Indian team's coach to give the CAC a wide range of options for picking the suitable candidate who will be appointed before the tour of Sri Lanka next month.

However, a A BCCI official said that even though Kohli wouldn’t have a role in the selection process, the new coach should have good relations with the Indian skipper. A three-member committee consisting of Laxman, Tendulkar and Ganguly will pick the new coach.

The official told AFP: “The advisory committee are adept at getting the right man but they would certainly have the Kumble episode at the back of their mind while selecting the new coach.”

“Even though Kohli has no role in the selection, a person who will get along with the captain is always good for the team and who better than Sachin, Sourav and Laxman to know how the captain-coach relationship works,” the official said.

Queried about the circumstances that led to Kumble's exit, the India captain was predictably reticent, citing the sanctity of the dressing room for his silence on the issue.

"We have created a culture over the last three-four years that whatever happens in the changing room, we've tried to maintain the sanctity of the changing room throughout," he said.

"...what happens in the changing room is something that's very sacred and private to all of us, and something that I would not express in details in a public scenario.

"As I said, his point of view is out there and we respect that decision."

Kumble's exit has been perceived at home as a victory for player power, which will also send out the wrong signal to whoever succeeds the former spin bowler in the high-profile job.

"I have total respect for him as a cricketer and what he has achieved for the nation, all the years that he has played," Kohli added. "There's no taking away that aspect of him at all. And we all respect him totally."
