Did you know Virat Kohli batted for Mohun Bagan AC?

Back in 2009, when he was no star and people referred to him Kohli, more than Virat, Mohun Bagan invited him to participate in the prestigious P Sen Trophy.

Kohli was just five One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and was a recruit of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), for whom he did decently well in the first two editions in 2008 and 2009.

However, his India appearance was almost a year old now. In the first five ODIs, Kohli, playing as an opener, scored 159 runs at 31.80 with five scores between 12 and 54. Every time he batted for India, he looked comfortable, almost throughout, until he eventually used to throw away his wickets.

Despite boosting of immense talent, Kohli was referred as the Indian-winning Under-19 captain for a really long time.

So, when Mohun Bagan passed on the offer to him, it was something he could not reject. Playing in the P Sen trophy would put him on the same league as some of the best Indian players. Apart from local star, Sourav Ganguly, the tournament in the past had participants like Sachin Tendulkar, Dhoni, and even Chaminda Vaas so Kohli agreed to play without even thinking twice.

Kohli’s Mohun Bagan also included players like Manish Pandey and Wriddhiman Saha and they played against Town Club, a side boosted of Saurabh Tiwary and Ishank Jaggi. They also had a fast bowler from Uttar Pradesh who had made quite a name for himself - Mohammed Shami, who was known as Shami Ahmed those days.

Mohun Bagan eventually defeated Town Club by 97 runs, thanks to Kohli’s onslaught of 184 off 121 balls.
