DNA Exclusive: Suresh Raina transforms from World Cup and IPL winner to mentor

Suresh Raina will be sharing his experiences as a mentor in a new mobile app. The left-hander is gearing up for Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy on January 10.

In a cricketing career that has spanned over 18 years, he experienced the highs of the 2011 World Cup triumph. He was the vital member of the Chennai Super Kings which won three Indian Premier League and Champions League T20 trophies. For the Indian cricket team, he will always be remembered as the first Indian player to hit a century in all three formats. This is what everyone knows about Suresh Raina. The left-hander has been part of many memorable moments when it comes to the Indian cricket team. Along with those moments, there are countless experiences and stories about how to deal with pressure, the anxieties, the highs and lows of the game and how normal life is impacted after achieving grand success.

For an Indian cricket fan, all these experiences and stories are heard, read and felt from a distance. A fan cannot interact with the player personally due to his huge fan following in India. However, during the coronavirus lockdown, interactions have changed. The world is now virtual. Teaching has changed. Fan meetings have also changed. Now, there is a provision individuals can be mentored in a proper, structured method. Although this is prominent now in teaching and meetings, this new method of interaction has also made player-fan access possible. When Suresh Raina announced his retirement from all international cricket in August 2020 along with MS Dhoni, it was actually the beginning of a new innings.

Suresh Raina, a World Cup and IPL winner, was now a mentor to people who wanted to pursue the passion of cricket in earnest. The platform from which Suresh Raina is going to be become a mentor is a new app called FrontRow, created in February 2020.

Speaking about his outlook for cricket in 2021 as well as his new avatar to DNA, Suresh Raina hopes to play some good cricket, having missed out on the IPL 2020 in controversial circumstances. When asked as to what his outlook for mentoring and for the Syed Mushtaq Ali will be, Suresh Raina was to the point.

“It's been so long I haven't played some good cricket, so my current focus is on the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, and definitely would like to prepare myself for the IPL 2021. My mantra is just believe in yourself. And, if you are taking up any sport or any of the field, it's really important to get to the roots of it. It's about finding your purpose, and if you want to achieve something then you need to have that dedication towards it,” Suresh Raina said.

 

The need for such an App?

The App FrontRow was created at the beginning of 2020 to help people across the country to pursue their passions. The App roped in prominent personalities like Neha Kakkar to teach singing, Bhuvneshwar Kumar for fast bowling, Yuzvendra Chahal for spin bowling and Suresh Raina for batting. In one of the videos, Yuzvendra Chahal, the legspinner who is a vital part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore franchise, is explaining how he will teach ordinary individuals to go about dismissing a batsmen with the art of legspin. On the other end of the spectrum, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, the India pacer is also giving fine tips about the art of fast bowling, especially nailing the yorker and how to go about beating the batsmen with pace, variations in line and length as well as nailing the yorker.

The App was created by Ishan Preet Singh, who has done Computer Science Engineering from IIT Delhi. “People are facing a lot of issues when it comes to learning and getting better at their passion. There is no organised way to learn various fields. It is not organised. The content that is available is of low quality, the instructors are not reliable. It is absolutely broken. We stepped in and wanted to become the one-stop destination for anyone who wanted to expand into this passion,” Ishan Preet Singh told exclusively to DNA.
