County Championship: Nottinghamshire's Ravichandran Ashwin's 6-69 bowls Surrey out for 240

Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin - who plays for Nottinghamshire in the County Championship - took 6-69 as he helped bowled out Surrey for 240 on the opening day of their match at Trent Bridge.

Having elected to bat, the visitors lost Ryan Patel early after a slow start. The 32-year-old dismissed openers Rory Burns and Patel lbw.

Dean Elgar (59) and Jamie Smith (42) however, rebuild the partnership by guiding Surrey to 126-2.

Ashwin later came back and took two wickets in quick succession. All 10 of Surrey's wickets fell to spin. Liam Patterson-White took 3-62.

Speaking to BBC, White said, "As a team, we've had a very positive day. It's almost the same as at Taunton, with all 10 wickets falling to spin. We knew it was going to turn but we didn't quite expect it to be as much as that, so we're delighted to bowl them all out.

"There was more personal expectation today. When I started my spell, I felt a little bit more under pressure, like I had to perform.

"I spoke to Ravi (Ashwin) and he said that I'd earnt the right to bowl, so be relaxed, tie up an end and the wickets will come.

"Eventually he broke through, getting the first wicket in his 12th over, followed by two more.

"Everyone said I'd deserved it, I felt personally that I hadn't but sometimes it goes your way and today it did again."

Nottinghamshire, lost opener Ben Slater to More Morkel as they closed on 20-1.
