The IPL 2021 mini-auction will be held in Chennai on February 18 after the conclusion of the second Test at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk. A total of 61 slots will be up for grabs in the event. Prior to the auction, the Indian Premier League released a list of players that were retained and released by the franchises. Following the lists, Kings XI Punjab has the highest purse with Rs 53.2 crore while Royal Challengers Bangalore has the most available slots with 13 after they released plenty of foreigners. The IPL player retention and release list saw many names like Glenn Maxwell, Steve Smith and Sheldon Cottrell get released from their respective franchises. Whether they will be picked by any other franchise remains to be seen.

Kings XI Punjab, Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bangalore have the maximum purse while Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders have the least purse heading into the auction. This will be a mini-auction while there will be a mega-auction in IPL 2022 in which nine or 10 teams might feature in the tournament that is slated to get bigger and better. However, following the end of the IPL 2021 auction, players can still be traded to other franchises till February 20. So far, Harshal Patel and Daniel Sams have been traded to Royal Challengers Bangalore from Delhi Capitals.

IPL 2021 in India?

The 2021 edition of the IPL is expected to be played in India as the coronavirus situation stabilises. With England coming for four Tests, five T20Is and three ODIs, the BCCI is confident that the IPL will be played in India. In the 2020 edition, the IPL was postponed from April to September due to the coronavirus pandemic and the tournament was held in the UAE. Mumbai Indians won the title in grand style as they defeated Delhi Capitals to win the trophy for the fifth time. Mumbai Indians have released players like James Pattinson, Nathan Coulter-Nile and Lasith Malinga. The Sri Lanka legend, who has played with the franchise ever since the inception of the IPL, announced his retirement from franchise cricket.

On the other hand, MS Dhoni's Chennai Super Kings will be aiming to bounce back after a poor IPL 2020 in which they finished seventh and did not qualify for the playoffs for the first time. Virat Kohli will be aiming to break Royal Challengers Bangalore's jinx of never having won the IPL in 13 attempts.
