The Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) on Wednesday imposed a life ban on Anuj Dedha for leading a mob to a physical attack on Under-23 chief selector Amit Bhandari on Monday.

In a meeting held here on Wednesday to specially conducted to seal the fate of the tainted cricketer, former Delhi skipper Gautam Gambhir proposed the life ban and everyone else present in the meeting accepted his proposal.

However, nobody inside the meeting room took up the issue of "conflict of interest" of almost all the DDCA selectors — imposed by Supreme Court ruling while accepting Justice Lodha panel recommendations — which is being considered the main cause of this unfortunate incident.

"The issue of conflict amongst selectors was not even taken up today because the meeting was specifically convened to deal with this very issue of assault," DDCA president and media baron Rajat Sharma told DNA on Wednesday.

Asked if the contentious issue can be discussed in the near future, or whether the selectors will be asked to come clean by declaring their conflict, Sharma replied in the negative.

"We were only dealing with the issue of indiscipline today (Wednesday). He (Anuj Dedha) has been banned from all forms of cricket activities in Delhi," Sharma said.

Bhandari was attacked by a mob of about nine people, who hit him with iron rods, hockey sticks and cricket bats. Bhandari was rushed to a nearby hospital by his co-selector where he received four stitches on his head.

This paper had mentioned earlier about how almost all the Delhi selectors, senior or junior, have been running their cricket academies in the National Capital Region, including Bhandari. Even his colleague Sukhvinder Singh has an academy in the name of his immediate family member.

The apex council member, Gambhir, who proposed a life ban on Dedha, was also in the firing line till a few months ago when he was appointed the government nominee in the DDCA despite being an active member of the state's Ranji Trophy squad.

The former India opener announced his retirement in the middle of the Ranji season after failing to contribute much with the bat. However, he never gave up the DDCA post during his playing days and has not yet come up with any proposal to clean up the conflict mess.

New guidelines

DDCA president Sharma, meanwhile, also assured of better security for selectors during trials and barred parents from entering the ground.

"The security of all our selectors is paramount," Sharma told this paper.

We (DDCA) have decided that only players will be granted entry to the grounds during any trials. None of his family members or friends will be allowed anywhere inside. This will be ensured by informing local police, wherever the trials will be conducted," the DDCA president added.
