Aanchal Thakur bags India's first skiing medal, PM Narendra Modi leads applause on Twitter

Aanchal Thakur, who belongs to a small village in Manali, won a bronze medal at the prestigious Alpine Ejder 3200 Cup in Turkey organised by The Federation Internationale de Ski.

India's Aanchal Thakur created history on Tuesday by winning a medal at the Alpine Ejder 3200 Cup in Turkey organised by The Federation Internationale de Ski.

Aanchal Thakur, who belongs to a small village in Manali, won a bronze medal at the prestigious event. The event was organised at Palandoken Ski Centre in Erzurum in Turkey, from January 6 to January 9.

Thakur won the medal in the slalom race category, which involves skiing between poles and gates spaced more closely than giants slalom or super giant slalom.

 

Congratulatory messages poured in for Aanchal on Twitter, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi leading the way. "Well done @alleaanchal for winning an international medal in skiing! The entire nation is ecstatic on your historic accomplishment at the FIS International Skiing Competition in Turkey. Wishing you the very best for your future endeavours," wrote Modi.

Union Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore was also among the first ones to send across his best wishes. "Congrats Aanchal Thakur @alleaanchal for the Slalom Skiing Bronze in the FIS International Skiing Competition in Turkey. India opens account by a first ever medal in skiing. Well done," he tweeted.

Aanchal's father Roshan Thakur, is a secretary general of winter games federation of India, who first introduced her to the skiing, later she was taught by Heera Lal a former Olympian.

Her training was mostly financed by her father and trips were paid by the International Ski Federation (FIS) without any monetary support from the central government.

 

Her brother is also a skier and next their next aim is to qualify for 2018 winter Olympics.
