When it has come to India vs Australia series in the last one year, a very peculiar pattern has emerged. Australia have won the first game in grand style only to lose the next two. This was repeated in 2019 when Australia won in Sydney but were undone in Adelaide and Melbourne by the brilliance of Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni. When Australia toured India in 2020, David Warner and Aaron Finch’s centuries gave Australia a 10-wicket win in Mumbai but they spectacularly imploded in the remaining two games to lose the series 1-2. In the last four series and in the last two years, Australia has won just one series and that too when they were 0-2 down.

In the current series, Aaron Finch’s side has started well with a win in the first ODI and they will be aiming to buck the trend and win the next game to start their international home summer on a high. Australia did not produce the perfect game, but they were aided by the fact that India had a terrible day in the field and a collapse of three wickets for 20-odd runs did not help either. The brilliance of Aaron Finch, Steve Smith, David Warner and Glenn Maxwell meant that the mountain of runs Australia produced was simply too much for India. It made one thing clear also. For Australia's players, international performance matters a lot more than the IPL. Had it not been for the brilliance of Hardik Pandya, the team would have suffered an even bigger loss.

Aaron Finch remarked that the performance of the side was not perfect, as illustrated by Mitchell Starc’s waywardness and fielding lapses especially when Adam Zampa dropped Virat Kohli and Pat Cummins failed to reach Shikhar Dhawan’s mistimed chance. With Virat Kohli not holding back and criticising the performance of the team, they would have gotten the ideal pep talk if they have to comeback in the series.

Team News

The Australian cricket team might not make any changes to the side that won the first game but for India, they may have to make some changes. It could make sense to get Kuldeep Yadav in place of Yuzvendra Chahal, who conceded the most runs by an Indian spinner in ODIs. On the bowling front, the team has options but the lack of a pace bowling all-rounder in the absence of Hardik Pandya is proving to be slightly cumbersome.

Probable 11s

India: Shikhar Dhawan, Mayank Agarwal, Virat Kohli (c), Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (wk), Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Navdeep Saini, Mohammed Shami, Yuzvendra Chahal/ Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah

Statistics

Virat Kohli averages just 11.4 in ODIs in Sydney and this is by far, his worst performance at a venue in Australia. When one contrasts it with Adelaide, Melbourne, Canberra, Perth and Hobart, his average in Sydney is woeful. Sydney is also India’s least favorite ODI venue, having won just two games against Australia in 39 years.
