India vs Australia, 1st ODI: Hosts win series opener thanks to Hardik Pandya's all-round heroics
LIVE | India v/s Australia, 1st ODI: Maxwell goes after brief resistance, visitors stare at defeat

Hardik Pandya's all-round brilliance and some excellent bowling by the Indian spinners secured a 26-run victory against Australia under the Duckworth-Lewis method in the rain-hit first one-day international on Sunday.

Pandya struck a career-best 83 and Mahendra Singh Dhoni made 79 to help the hosts overcome a top-order collapse and post 281-7 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.

Here are the live updates of the first ODI of the 5-match series between India vs Australia:

'22:13

INDIA WIN!

So that's that, the hosts have won the serious opener by 26 runs (DLS method).

'22:07

Australia need 34 from the last over.

'22:04

OUT!

Coulter-Nile smokes one, but the ball goes straight to Kedar at deep mid-wicket.

The fast-bowler, who had a good day with the ball, got unlucky there.

'22:02

Excellent death bowling from Bhuvi and Bumrah.

Visitors simply aren't able to get the boundaries.

AUS: 125/8 in 19 overs

'21:54

OUT!

And as were talking, Chahal gets rid of Cummins. Tries to go for a big one, but the edge went straight to short third-man.

The pacer's cameo of 9 from 7 brought to an abrupt end.

'21:52

Faulkner and Cummins trying to put up a fight here.

But the task at hand seems too big.

AUS: 109/7 in 17 overs

'21:44

OUT!

Matthew Wade steps out of the crease, Chahal bowls it wide, Dhoni whips off the bails, Australia lose another wicket.

It's ending in a hurry for the visitors.

AUS: 92/7 in 15.3 overs

'21:30

OUT!

Another one goes down, this time it's Marcus Stoinis.

Went for a maximum but found Ravindra Jadeja at the mid-wicket boundary.

Kuldeep gets his second wicket after getting pounded in his previous over.

AUS: 78/6 after 13 overs

'21:28

OUT!

Chahal removes Maxwell!

Massive moment in the match. Maxi had smashed a six off the previous ball, but found the fielder at long-on as he tried to clear the boundary again.

Great entertainment from the right-hander, though. Walks back for 39 from 18.

AUS: 76/5 in 12 overs

'21:22

Hat-trick of sixes!

Glenn Maxwell takes the attack to India, emulates Pandya's feats with the bat.

Kuldeep Yadav smashed for 23 runs in one over.

Maxi will need to play a special knock tonight if Australia are to have a chance.

AUS: 69/4 in 11 overs

'21:13

Australia 45 for 4 are after 9 overs.

Is the contest all but over?

'21:08

OUT!

Kuldeep removes danger-man Warner.

Top-class stuff from the young chinaman bowler. Bowls a leg-break that beats the Aussie vice-captain all ends up. Follows that up with a flipper that gets an edge of the bat.

MS Dhoni completes the job with an absolutely sensational catch behind the stumps. The edge was thick and MSD did tremendously well to hold on to the ball.

'21:02

OUT!

Head goes for a wild hoic, finds the edge and Dhoni takes a simple catch.

It's that man Pandya again for India!

'20:58

Kuldeep Yadav replaces Bumrah, gives away five runs off his first over.

Travis Head has joined Warner at the crease for Australia.

India are firmly in the driver's seat.

AUS: 25/2 in 6 overs

'20:55

OUT!

Hardik Pandya replaces Bhuvi, gets the wicket of skipper Steve Smith!

Pandya hit Smith's pad the previous ball, the umpire gave it not-out, and the DRS too saved the Aussie captain by a whisker.

But on the next ball, Smith again tried to play a poor flick towards square-leg. Only this time, the ball went high up, and Bumrah took a brilliant catch running backwards at fine-leg.

It's Hardik Pandya's day today!

'20"45

OUT!

Bumrah strikes for India as Hilton Cartwright's stumps are rattled.

Good start this for India.

'20:43

First boundary for Australia!

Bhuvi drifts on to Warner's pads. The left-hander places it nicely to the right of fine-leg for four.

AUS: 13/0 in 3 overs

'20:38

Jasprit Bumrah gives five runs from his first over.

Not much happening off the wicket at the moment.

We'll have to wait and see if the rain has had any kind of impact on the pitch.

'20:34

Good start from Bhuvi. Just a wide and a single from the first over.

'20:30

The first ball of the Australian innings is about to be bowled.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar has the ball, David Warner is on strike.

Here we go!

'20:28

Right, play is finally about to resume after the rather long rain delay.

The revised target for Australia is 164 in 21 overs.

'17:30

India finish at 281/7 after their 50 overs.

A pretty good score consider they had lost half their side for just 87 runs.

Bhuvi gets a FOUR off the panultimate ball to take India to 281.

'17:28

OUT

And he is gone- Dhoni misses the third ball.

On the fourth he holes out to long-off. Dhoni gets it high on the bat and splices it to Warner for a head-high catch.

IND- 277/7 after 49.4 overs

'17:27

Dhoni misses the FREE HIT, no run.

And then sends the next ball for a SIX.

IND- 277/6 after 49.2 overs

'17:26

Faulkner to Dhoni.

First ball is a no ball- and Dhoni pull it away to the fine-leg boundary.

'17:24

Good 49th over from Cummings. Just 4 runs off it.

Bhuvi slices the last ball of the over to the front of cover. It does not carry to Stoinis.

Dhoni refuses the single to keep the strike.

IND- 266/6 after 49 overs

'17:19

4,6,4

And... Dhoni finally decides to attack and earns 16 runs off the over.

The highlight has to be the SIX. Faulkner went full and wide outside off but Dhoni extends his reach and put it over extra cover.

IND- 262/6 after 48 overs

'17:13

6 runs off the over. Dhoni keeps the strike (not sure that's a good thing or bad!).

IND- 246/6 after 47 overs

'17:10

Dhoni gets to his 50. His 66th ODI fifty comes of 75 balls. Another crucial innings from him.

'17:08

Bhuvneshwar is batting with ease and confidence. He hits Coulter-Nile for consecutive boundaries. Will Dhoni join in now?

IND- 240/6 after 46 overs

'17:03

Kumar hits Stoinis for a FOUR and then survives a LBW appeal next ball.  Smith chooses to challenge the decision. But replays suggest inside edge first, then onto the flap of the back pad.

30 balls to go.

IND- 228/6 after 45 overs

'16:58

FOUR

Dhoni scores his 1st boundary (he is batting at 47). 8 runs off the Coulter-Nile over.

IND- 221/6 after 44 overs

16:54

Kumar takes one four of the over. Adam Zampa finished with the figures of 10-0-66-1, pretty good except for that ONE over.

IND- 213/6 after 43 overs

'16:50

Coulter-Nile is back into the attack. Bhuvneshwar Kumar has joined Dhoni in the middle. Tight over, just one off it.

IND- 206/6 after 42 overs

'16:45

OUT

And he is gone. No more SIXes from Pandya on Sunday.

Zampa cuts the flight, bowls it flatter and faster. Pandya goes low for a slog-sweep and top edged it to short third man. He goes for 83 off 66 balls.

IND- 205/6 after 41 overs

'16:43

SIX

This one takes India over 200.

Pandya is loving Zampa here. Flights on the middle stump and Pandya clears his front leg and send it over the wide long-on. On the roof, actually.

'16:40

SIX

Pandya hits it over long-off. It was slow one and Hardik read it.

Meanwhile, Dhoni is ever-busy rotating the strike.

The platform is set for the last 10 overs.

IND- 198/5 after 40 overs

'16:37

Pandya takes a boundary each from the 38th and 39th over. The run rate has jumped to 4.76 now.

IND- 186/5 after 39 overs

'16:28

4, 6, 6, 6 - Pandya takes Zampa to the cleaners.

Pandya brings the Indian 150 with a FOUR and then follows it with three consecutive SIXES. (It's not LUDO so they definitely count). 24 runs off the over.

IND- 172/5 after 37 overs

'16:18

15 overs to go. India's current run rate is 4.17, which takes the score to 209. The hosts will certainly look to get near 270.

IND- 146/5 after 35 overs

'16:13

All calm and easy here right now. Singles and some wayward balls (4 byes in the 31st over) doing the job for India. Dhoni has moved to 26 with his strike rate just over 50 while Pandya is on 32.

IND- 143/5 after 34 overs

'15:53

A maiden over by Faulkner. Dhoni is playing his typical innings here. Not taking any risks till the last overs.

Pandaya, on the other hand is living dangerously. He survived an edge off an aimless stab. Smith  misjudges it and Pandya gets a FOUR instead of going back.

IND- 118/5 after 29 overs

15:45

It is going very slow for India at this moment. Just 8 runs of the last 3 overs. It should not be a problem if these two stay till the end.

IND- 110/5 after 27 overs

'15:31

FOUR

Pandya scoops one over slip to bring India's hundered.

IND- 102/5 after 24 Overs

'15:26

It seems India's fortunes rest again on the shoulder of the seasoned warrior MS Dhoni. Pandya is the last recognised batsman in the line up (yes, yes Bhuvi can bat). India need to make this partnership count.

IND- 95/5 after 23 Overs

'15:20

OUT

Jadhav is caught at midwicket. He wanted to drag a short one at off stump to the leg side. The balls hits the high part of the bat. An easy catch to Cartwright.

Jadhav is gone for 40. Hardik Pandya is the new man in.

IND- 87/5 after 21.3 overs

'15:07

Kedar Jadav is playing with lot of confidence here, specially against the spin attack. He has moved to 36 off 43 balls. He and Dhoni need to stay there if India want to make something out of this match.

IND- 80/4 after 19 overs

'14:57

OUT

Just when it looked like India were back on track, Rohit Sharma departs. He holes out to deep square leg. Stoinis gets a wicket. Coulter-Nile takes the catch.

Sharma made 28.

Crowd welcome the next batsman with the chants of Dhoni! Dhoni!

IND- 64/4 after 15 overs

'14:51

Adam Zampa joins the attack. Just 2 runs of his first over.

IND- 59/3 after 14 overs

'14:47

1,1,1,1,1,1

Six singles off this Stoinis over. Not much in the wicket now it seems. Time for Drinks.

IND- 57/3 after 13 overs

'14:41

Two boundaries off the Faulkner over. 50 up for India.

Both bastmen in their 20s now. They are bringing India back in the game.

IND- 51/3 after 13 overs

'14:36

Excellent start from Australia here. Marcus Stoinis replaces Coulter-Nile in the attack.

Another tidy over just 3 off it.

IND- 41/3 after 12 overs

'14:26

Coulter-Nile has bowled a great spell here: 5-0-12-3.

10 overs gone. India are 34 for the loss of three wickets.

'14:20

Rohit Sharma gets his first boundary. It has taken 20 balls.

IND- 30/3 after 9 overs

14:12

India need to steady the innings now. Great start of the series so far for Australia.

Meanwhile, Kedar Jadhav has helped himself to two boundaries.

IND- 23/3 after 7 overs

14:03

OUT

And another duck. Manish Pandey this time.

Pandey is also gone nicking behind. Umpire checks for a bump ball. It was done alright by Wade. India lose their third.

Coulter-Nile takes his third.

IND- 11/3

'14:00

OUT

Virat Kohli is gone for duck. Coulter-Nile takes his second wicket.

Maxwell pulls off a one-handed catch at backward point. Kohli went after a full and wide ball but he slices it into the air. Maxwell takes a great catch to send back the Indian skipper.

IND- 11/2

'13:58

Maiden over from Cummings.

IND- 11/1 after 5 overs

'13:53

OUT

Rahane is going back. Rahane throws his bat at a ball that was on a length and wide outside off. The snick takes it to Wade, who moves to his right to take the catch.

Kohli is coming in.

IND- 11/1 after 3.3 overs

'13:48

The Indian openers are being watchful here. Each of them take a couple to keep the scoreboard moving.

Cummins is bowling with good pace- mid 140s.

IND- 10/0 after 3 overs

'13:43

Coulter-Nile from the other end.

Just one run off it. The ball is swinging a little here.

IND- 4/0 after 2 overs

'13:36

Good over from Cummins.

Rahane gets off on the very first ball, while Rohit managed a couple on the last.

IND- 3/0 after 1 over

'13:31

HERE WE GO!

Pat Cummins starts with the new ball. Two slips in position.

'13.30

Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane make their way to the middle.

Australian players are in a huddle on the ground.

'13:15

Virat Kohli confirms at the toss that Ajinkya Rahane will open.

Australia have left Kane Richardson, Ashton Agar, Peter Handscomb and Aaron Finch out of the team.

'13:10

Australia: D Warner, H Cartwright, S Smith, TM Head, G Maxwell, MP Stoinis, M Wade, J Faulkner, P Cummins, N Coulter-Nile, A Zampa

India: A Rahane, RG Sharma, V Kohli, M Pandey, MS Dhoni, K Jadhav, H Pandya, B Kumar, K Yadav, Y Chahal, J Bumrah

'13:05

Virat Kohli win the toss, opts to bat first.

'12:55

Hello and welcome to the Live coverage from the first ODI between India and Australia in Chennai.

India skipper Virat Kohli said Saturday that competitiveness and "mind games" can be good for cricket as his team prepares to face their arch-rival Australia in a one-day series starting on Sunday. While Australia captain Steve Smith has batted for peace and urged the five-match series to be played in "good spirit", Kohli hinted that a bit of aggression can be useful to get the best out of players. "All those things are to get that aspect of mind games which I think creates an excitement for the fans watching as well," Kohli told reporters on the eve of the limited-overs series in Chennai. The hosts are on top form after recently beating Sri Lanka 9-0 in Tests, one day games and Twenty20, but second-ranked Australia poses a different challenge.
