Readers' comments:
Why is he not commenting on the government's plan to scrap the anti-homosexuality act? Why didn't he say anything when a gay couple got married with Hindu religious customs? Yes, whatever Muslims are doing might not be correct, but who gave you the right to talk when your own behaviour is hypocritical?

Yeah, but first Balu should send all the Maharashtrian balikas to Khajuraho for a thorough perfection in the art of Kamasutra before banning the burqa, as did the French president and the society there.

Mr Thackeray, this is a democracy. Who are you to decide what to wear?

We all want to ban burqa in public.

Let Bal Thackeray migrate to France since he likes the ruler, so that Nicolas Sarkozy can ban his dhoti-jhubba and put him in jeans and T-shirt with a iPod in his ears, Then we will praise Nicolas Sarkozy as the ideal ruler. He sucks.

Respected Balasaheb, we should leave each and everybody on his or her own wish. If they want to wear burqa, let them. If they don't want to, it's up to them. How will you feel if someone were to force you to cut your hair?

Hi, I certainly support him in this matter. Not all women want to be in burqa. They do so due to institutionally pressured demand, or risk being killed for the sake of IZZAT. Burqa should be banned.

A common civil code will benefit all religions and communities since it will cover the laws extracted from Hindu laws, Islamic law, Christian laws, etc. This is a very good suggestion.

This guy shouldn't say anything, because he will just show his ignorance.

indian muslim,
So he must also ask for the ghungat or purdah or sar-pe-pallu system in Hinduism to be banned! What a hypocrite...

Well, if you appreciate the French president kissing his wife in public, why do your party workers create a nuisance during Valentine's Day?

Thackeray Sr should also support and appreciate the French president's stand against the pagdi and implement it in Maharashtra.

Seeing the current status of the Shiv Sena and the MNS, every now and then these people try to draw the attention of public by playing foul with different religions and the sentiments of the people. These matters should be taken up seriously by the law and people carrying out such acts should be punished so that in future they stop playing around with religion.

If he wants the burqa to be banned and praises the Frenchman, then let him ask his ladies to wear skin-tight jeans and tops and come out in public. Weren't the Sainiks fighting to save Indian culture?

The Sena, which was chasing girls to dress properly, is now praising Sarkozy for his proposed ban on the burqa and his public kissing? God! Protect us from such idiots.

Way to go, Mr Thackeray. This man has got recognition because he can call a spade a spade. I fully second his remarks. India is not a Muslim country and if they want to live like Indians they should stop using the veil because, like Sarkozy said, it is disrespecting the modern Indian woman.

Please note that wearing a burqa is not obligatory in Islam. No woman will wear it by force. If you want to see what Islam is, come to Dubai. People from 280 countries and persons from all the Indian states live here and respect every religion. Reason: we do not have politicians who open their mouths only to poison the atmosphere.

If Bal Thackeray likes Sarkozy so much, then why doesn't he think of making semi-nude culture like in France compulsory? Instead, his party opposes even Valentine's Day. Come on, India, wake up!
