Giving a push to India's Make in India plans, Chinese handset maker Xiaomi on Monday announced setting up of three new smartphone manufacturing units in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.

Xiaomi is also setting up a new printed circuit board (PCB) assembly unit in Sriperumbudur in partnership with Foxconn. The company didn't reveal the investment numbers for setting up the manufacturing facilities.

"We had two facilities for smartphone manufacturing earlier. Now, we have set up three more in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh and Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu in partnership with Foxconn," said Manu Jain, Xiaomi India's VP and managing director.

These will double Xiaomi's manufacturing capacity in India to two phones per second during operational hours, and would employ over 10,000 people of which 95% will be women employees, Jain said.

"We are committed to manufacturing in India. PCB is 50% of the value of a phone. By the third quarter, all Xiaomi phones made in India will have PCBs that are locally assembled," he said.

Xiaomi, which is among the top smartphone players in India, is also hosting over 50 of its global suppliers here who will be visiting Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh to explore investment opportunities for setting up local manufacturing base. "If these companies choose to invest here, there is an investment opportunity of over Rs 15,000 crore and can generate employment for over 50,000 people," Jain said.

India is one of the fastest growing mobile phone markets globally. According to research firm IDC, about 288 million mobile phones were shipped in India in 2017 at a growth rate of 16% while smartphones grew 14%.

The government has been promoting Make In India where various measures have been taken to attract investments. Till now, investments through mobile assembly units have come up in a large number.
