Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) on Friday announced their plan to to defer recovery of loan amount from Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) beneficiaries for the next six refills starting April 1 next month.
Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) on Friday announced their plan to to defer recovery of loan amount from Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) beneficiaries for the next six refills starting April 1 next month.
"The decision has been taken keeping in line with the spirit of PMUY scheme and the country’s goal to achieve universal LPG penetration by 2022," a statement from Indian Oil Corp said.
It said, this deferment of loan recovery, up to six refills would be applicable for all the existing PMUY LPG connections who have taken loan for stove and/ or first LPG cost from OMCs.
The statement further read that all new consumers who would be enrolled after April 1, would also have a deferred recovery of the outstanding loan amount up to 6 LPG refills.
OMCs decision came ahead the Karnataka elections. The state government in poll bound Karnataka launched its own free LPG scheme in February, saying the state's poor did not get ‘proper’ benefit of the Ujjwala scheme.
In this year's Budget, FM Arun Jaitley had said that around 8 crore women would get free LPG connection under Ujjwala scheme.
"Ujjwala Yojana target is being extended to eight crore women living below the poverty line. It was earlier at five crore. The women will receive a free gas connection," Jaitley said.
Jaitley made the announcement while presenting the the fifth budget of the Narendra Modi led government before the Parliament.
Ujjwala scheme provides financial support of Rs1,600 for each cooking gas connection to eligible households. The connections are given in the name of the women heads of households. The government also provides an equated monthly instalment facility for meeting the cost of stove and refills.
