Ahmedabad becomes the third city in the country to soon get direct flight to Iraq. With Iraqi Airways all set to commence its operations from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (SVPI) this summer, it becomes third international airlines to start operations from the city airport.

In winters of 2017, Jazeera airlines had commenced its operations from Ahmedabad to Kuwait thrice a week. In terms of increasing connectivity internationally, SpiceJet had commenced its flight to Bangkok whereas Ethopian airlines that used to operate freight flights from the city is also planning to add three passenger flights along with Air Asia.

As far as domestic connectivity is concerned, the airport will have direct connectivity on domestic routes that will include Chandigarh, Guwahati, Trivandrum and Nagpur. City airport also got a connectivity to Varanasi, a new route for few months. The summer schedule was to start from March but due to the non-operational runway because of the runway repair work, the schedule will start from April 15 onwards.

Sources at the airport said, "We have route meeting held abroad where AAI markets their airports and proposes airlines to come to different cities. City airport officials have been constantly pushing and requesting more number of international airlines to start operations from Ahmedabad. After the airlines did a study and analyzed the proposal, they agreed to start their operations from here. After Jazeera Airways, Iraqi Airways will be a great boon for Ahmedabad.

A student of architecture said, "Iraq has some of the beautiful places like Abbasid Palace in Baghdad, Ali Baba Square, Arch of Ctesiphon, Babylon, Baghdad Bazaars and other ancient sites in the cities of Baghdad, Mosul and Basra. Many architects have also written books on the ancient structures in Iraq. Apart from this community, I am not very sure whether people will be attracted given the disturbed area tag that Iraq carries. I believe it would attract students, pilgrims and professionals rather than tourists."
