Relax! Rs 10 coins in your wallet are not fake, clarifies RBI: 5 points to know

You might have face the situation every now and then there are certain people who still refuse to accept Rs 10 coin. They consider the Rs 10 coin as fake, however, Reserve Bank of India had cleared the air stating that all Rs 10 coins in circulation are legitimate and genuine. 

The Central Bank mentioned that there is a total of 14 categories of Rs 10 coins currently in circulation.

"It has come to the notice of the Reserve Bank that in certain places there is reluctance on part of traders and members of public to accept Rs 10 coins due to suspicion about their genuineness", RBI said. 

"As coins have longer life, coins of different designs and shapes circulate in the market at the same time. So far the Reserve Bank has issued Rs 10 coins in 14 designs and the public has been informed of their distinctive features through Press Releases (list appended). All these coins are legal tender and can be accepted for transactions", RBI further clarified. 

The Central Bank requested people to accept Rs 10 coins and had advised banks to accept coins for transactions and exchange at all their branches.

Below are the key points you need to know about the Rs 10 coins

1. At present, there are a total of 14 types of Rs 10 coins issued by the Reserve Bank of India. 

2.These coins, it further said, have distinctive features to reflect various themes of economic, social and cultural values and are introduced from time to time. "So far the Reserve Bank has issued Rs 10 coin in 14 designs... All these coins are legal tender and can be accepted for transactions," the RBI said.

3.The Reserve Bank has in the past also issued a Press Release (November 20, 2016) requesting citizens to continue to accept coins of Rs 10 denomination as legal tender in all their transactions without any hesitation.

4."As coins remain in circulation for longer periods, it is quite possible that coins of different designs and even shapes are circulating at the same time. One such change is introduction of 'Rupee symbol' in coins in July 2011. An instance of this is the Rs 10 coins with rupee symbol and the same denomination coin without rupee symbol. Both of them are legal tender and equally good for transactions, though they may look a little different", RBI said. 

5. In a statement issued on November 20, 2016, the RBI had said that there are two distinct Rs. 10 coins, one with rupee symbol and the another without rupee symbol. Both of them are legal tender.
