Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a joint venture (JV) of the companies under Ministry of Power (MoP), has announced a collaboration with two Canadian companies for development of battery storage technology that will be capable of charging electric vehicles in less than five minutes.

The project implementation cost stands at over $120 million, and the technology will be replicated in India in future, if successful.

At present, slow battery chargers take 7-8 hours for the same and fast ones take over a couple of hours.

Elaborating about the development, Saurabh Kumar, MD, EESL, said the project development is on. He said that the electric vehicles will take off globally, including India, only if the charging time can be shortened to about the same time it takes to fill a conventional fuel. “People cannot wait for hours to get their cars fueled. It has to happen in less than five minutes” Kumar added.

Kumar spoke during an event announcing the collaboration of EESL with Mumbai based Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) for an LED replacement programme with energy efficient (EE) alternatives across Mahindra's 18 manufacturing facilities in India.

According to Pawan Goenka, MD at M&M, the installation of LED lighting will save around 20 million units of electricity per annum for the company. An investment of around Rs 16 crore has been made in this project.

EESL, with a capex of Rs 6,000 crore for the expenditure during the FY18, seeks to be a $1.5 billion-dollar (Rs 10,000 crore) by the year 2020. EESL has distributed over 27 crore LED bulbs and retrofitted 36.54 lakh smart LED streetlights across India through self-sustaining commercial models.

Talking about other international projects, SP Garnaik, chief GM (Technical) at EESL, said that operations at seven acquired Energy Saving Performance Contracting (ESPC) have begun and revenue generation has started.

Meanwhile, EESL is also involved in another project of grid stabilisation in Canada. It has also begun its operations in UK, South Asia and South-East Asia.

Further, a pipeline of projects worth over 100 million pounds of investment has been identified. Even UJALA scheme, targeting 100 million units in three years, has been initiated.

In Malaysia, an LED programme has been kick-started, apart from the 20 million LED being supplied to Nepal. A similar technical assistance is also being provided to Saudi Arabia, Vietnam and Myanmar.
