Post-GST, Gujarat records tax revenue of over Rs 30K crore

The Gujarat government received more income from tax payers after implementation of the GST. Finance minister of state and deputy chief minister Nitin Patel declared the figures of income through taxes pre and post GST regime and that showed that government earned more income through taxes after GST and that was recorded at Rs 30,894.92 crore between August 1, 2017 to January 31, 2018.

The Congress MLA from Talala Bhaga Barad had asked question to the minister during Question Hour in the state Assembly on Thursday. The question could not come for debate due to precedence order, but the answer was put on record of the house.

As per the reply filed by the government, the government had received income of Rs 28,246.71 crore during the equal period in previous year between August 1, 2016 and January 31, 2017. The MLA had also asked that did the government incurred any loss in income post GST regime, to which the minister replied that the income was increased.

The MLA further asked that how much compensation the central government paid to the state government against the losses in tax income.

The deputy chief minister replied, “No decrease in tax income was recorded in the state post-GST regime but the central government ought to pay the compensation to the state as per Article 5 of the GST Act considering 2015-16 as base year and the growth in income at a rate of 14 per cent has to be counted every year.

Under this provision, the Gujarat government received Rs 2,534 crore as compensation.”
