The Ministry of Electronics and IT plans to soon come out with a policy to prevent rampant ransomware attacks as India moves toward a digitally-powered economy.

A legal framework is also in the offing for cybersecurity standards to prevent any cyberattacks.

The policy will be ready in a month or two and is being prepared by CERT-In.

"The formulation of appropriate standards, a legal framework for enforcing applicable standards and a compliance mechanism -- testing, certification and surveillance are the immediate requirements," a senior official from the ministry said.

The government has been taking proactive steps to ensure safe cyber space. The ongoing global conference will seek to extend cooperation amongst global counterparts on this issue.

In June this year, due to a global cyberattack, the operations of a terminal at India's largest container port Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) was impacted. A national cyber coordination centre (NCCC) under the IT ministry, has also been set up to ensure near real-time threat assessment and situational awareness, which would allow timely alerts and analysis of cyberattacks.

Cyber Swachhata Kendra, a Botnet cleaning and malware analysis centre, was also launched recently which offers free tools to users to clear malicious infections from their systems and works closely with internet service providers and banks to ensure a clean and safe internet ecosystem. The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), under the IT ministry, operates the Botnet centre. There is also a plan to create sectoral CERTs apart from the CERTs at state level.

According to the data available, in 2016, there were about 50,300 cybersecurity incidents observed such as phishing, website intrusions and defacements, virus and denial of service attacks. There was also a similar global cyberattack – WannaCry earlier this year.
