Country's four oil major firms, Oil and Natural Gas Corp. (ONGC), Hindustan Petroleum Corp. Ltd (HPCL), Indian Oil Corp. Ltd (IOCL) and Oil India Ltd (OIL) contributed over Rs 121 crore from their CSR funds towards the construction of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel's Statue of Liberty in fiscal year of 2017, reported Mint.

As a part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR), ONGC spent Rs 50 crore; OIL and HPCL of Rs 25 crore and IOCL donated Rs 21.83 crore respectively, according to the annual reports of the above mentioned PSUs.

The expenditure of over Rs 121 crore, led to a three-fold hike in CSR spends by the top 100 National Stock Exchange-listed firms by market capitalization in FY17 under National Heritage initiatives as compared to the previous fiscal year.

The statue of unity (SoU), dedicated to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel-the sculptor of united India-is being constructed at a faster pace than that of the world’s tallest building at present-the Burj Khalifa also known as Burj Dubai.

While the 985 metre-building at a rate of construction of 3.18 metre per week took five years for completion, the Iron Man’s 182 metre-tall statue is being constructed at a rate of 4.5 metre per week. It would be double the height of world’s tallest statue at present- Statue of Liberty- in the USA.

Member of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Rashtriya Ekta Trust (SVPRET) and chairman in Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Limited, SS Rathore, told DNA, "The construction is going on at a fast pace. It has reached 103.5 metre-level at a speed of 4.5 metre per week. Including the base pedestal, total height of the structure would be 248 metre and the construction has reached 161.5 metre by Sunday."

He added, "We hope that the entire project will be ready by its set deadline of October next year."
