Now, Chennai, Lucknow and Guwahati airports to get massive upgrading

Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved expansion and upgrading plans for Chennai, Lucknow and Guwahati airports at a cost of Rs 2,467 crore, Rs 1,232 crore and Rs 1,383 crore, respectively.

“The Cabinet has today approved three major infrastructure projects - new terminal buildings at Guwahati, Chennai and Lucknow airports. It will go a long way in ensuring even superior air travel experience for our people,” tweeted Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu.

As per the details available, Chennai Airport’s terminal will be expanded to 3,36,000 sq. metres to handle 35 million passengers per annum. This kind of passenger growth is expected to be achieved by 2026-27. The new terminal building will have green building features with an aim to achieve GRIHA-4 Star rating.

Similarly, Lucknow Airport will get a new integrated terminal building with an area of 88,000 sq. mtrs. along with the existing terminal of 16,292 sq. metre being there. “It will have annual capacity to handle 2.6 million international and 11 million domestic passenger traffic. The new terminal building would cater to the requirement of passenger growth up to the year 2030-31,” read a statement issued on Wednesday.

Whereas, Guwahati Airport will get a new terminal building of an area of 1,02,500 sq. metres to handle combined annual capacity (old and new terminals) of 9 million passengers per annum to cater to the requirement of passenger growth up to the year 2026-27.

The government is positive that the expansion of Guwahati Airport will encourage investment and tourism in North East Region.
