Major Indian ports register further growth in handling cargo

Major Indian ports registered a positive growth of 3.46 per cent for the period between April-November, 2017 as compared to 3.27 per cent growth registered between April-October.

The 12 major ports put together handled 439.66 Million Tonnes (MT) of cargo during these eight months of FY2018 as against 424.96 MT handled during the corresponding period of last year.

The nine ports of Kolkata (including Haldia), Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Chennai, Cochin, New Mangalore, Mumbai, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust and Deendayal Port (former Kandla Port) have registered positive growth in traffic, as per statistics with Ministry of Shipping.

The highest cargo traffic growth was registered by Cochin Port at 17.93%, followed by Paradip at 13.13%, Kolkata (including Haldia) at 12.64%, New Mangalore at 7.07% and JNPT at 5.69%.

Commodity-wise percentage share of Petroleum, Oil and Lubricants was highest with 34.02%, followed by container at 19.89% share, thermal and steam coal having 13.07% share of cargo share. The balance cargo comprised of other miscellaneous cargo, coking and other coal, iron ore and pellets, other liquid, finished fertilizer, etc.

Meanwhile, India secured the second highest votes and was re-elected to Category-B (states with the largest interest in international seaborne trade) of International Maritime Organisation Council. The IMO Council has 40 member countries.
