The transport department of Maharashtra incurred Rs 16.61 lakh loss due to tax evasion on cars imported from other countries.

According to a report published in the Hindustan Times, the public accounts committee (PAC) has questioned the state government for incurring a loss of Rs 16.61 lakh owing to evasion of taxes on high-end cars imported from other countries.

The loss incurred due to the failure of tax collection in nine cases in Thane, Nashik and Kolhapur, the report said.

After the tax evasion came to light, the committee has slammed the department and has asked it to go through the similar changes to avoid any further loss.

The committee held hearings and cross-examined officials from the transport department of the government after the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) passed strictures about the evasion in its report in 2011-12. Nine high-end cars, including one BMW, were found to have evaded duty in 2010, the publication said.

“The imported cars should have paid the one-time import duty, but random checks at the three districts found evasion of the duty. After strictures by the CAG, the duty was collected but no action was initiated against the officials responsible,” the committee stated in its report.

It has also suggested that the department closely monitor the ports in the country to avoid similar evasion.

Meanwhile, tax officials detected the evasion of Goods and Services Tax (GST) and Value Added Tax (VAT) worth Rs 14 crore from 16 companies through search operations in the past month and a half.

Searches were conducted at 78 locations across the state by flying squads of the Commissioner of Commercial Taxes. In addition to the undisclosed incomes, incriminating documents have also been recovered.

According to a statement of the Commisionerate, Rs 1.37 crore was recovered from Chartered Speed Private Ltd, Rs 33.8 lakh from Hazel Merchentile, Rs 41.3 lakh from Whitehouse Tiles, Rs  28.85 lakh from Mahashakti Coke, Rs 19.99 lakh from Spherecube Infrastructure, Rs 17.96 lakh from Torque Automotive, Rs 16.39 lakh from Narayani Coke, Rs 15.78 lakh from Mahavir Enterprise, Rs 13.87 lakh from Ashapura Saw Mills, Rs 13.66 lakh from Laxmi Snacks, Rs 13.35 lakh from Dharmabhakti Ceracoat, and so on.

Officials said they have  also seized computers which “unearthed huge tax evasions.”
