The Sensex and Nifty closed at record high on Tuesday after the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP)'s victory in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's turf Gujarat and the state of Himachal Pradesh.

The BSE Sensex rose 0.7 per cent to end at 33,836.74, while the NSE Nifty ended 0.72 per cent higher at 10,463.20.

Both indexes rose for a fourth straight session. The Sensex rise was led by the auto companies, although virtually every sector saw a rise apart from tech and IT.

Among the top gainers were Maruti Suzuki, Hero MotoCorp, Tata Motors and Bajaj Auto while Infosys, Wipro and IndusInd Bank were the top losers.

Buoyed by the BJP's electoral success in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh, the Sensex in early trade on Tuesday rallied 143 points as it moved closer to an all-time high.
Firm Asian stocks on bets that US tax reforms Bill will go through supported the uptrend.

The NSE Nifty wrested control of the crucial 10,400-mark.

In the sectoral space, all indices were up, driven by auto and consumer durables, with gains of up to 1.22 per cent.

Analysts said buying picked up after assembly elections results showed that BJP will return to power for the sixth straight term in Gujarat and topples the Congress to form government in Himachal Pradesh.

Major gainers were Tata Motors, M&M, ICICI Bank, ONGC, Bajaj Auto and Maruti Suzuki, rising up to 1.59 per cent.
