The Ministry of Electronics and IT has sought an explanation from social networking giant Facebook over reports of sharing of users' data with Chinese smartphone makers.

"Media reports claim that Facebook has agreements which allow phone and other device manufacturers' to access to users' personal information, including that of their friends, without taking their consent explicitly," the ministry said in an official statement. "The government of India is deeply concerned about reports of such lapses/violations," it said, asking Facebook to respond by June 20.

Facebook was sent a notice in March following the controversy over data-sharing with UK-based Cambridge Analytica. It had sought clarification on whether or not the data of Indian users on its platform has been compromised.

Facebook, in its response, had said that the data of over 5.6 lakh users in India may have been accessed without their consent. Facebook has over 20 crore users in the country.

"In response to earlier notices about breaches of personal data relating to the Cambridge Analytica episode, Facebook had apologised and given strong assurances to the Government of India that they would make sincere efforts to protect the privacy of users' data on the platform," the statement said.
