Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. on Tuesday denied reports that the Aadhaar data of over 67 lakh customers has been leaked on Indane website. Indane is a LPG brand owned by the Indian Oil Corporation (IndianOil).

Reports surfaced in media after Baptiste Robert, who goes by the online handle Elliot Alderson, wrote in a blog post on Medium on Tuesday that he investigated the issue after receiving an anonymous tip from a Twitter follower. Alderson's probe revealed that information in a part of the Indane website was not secured with adequate safeguards.

"Due to a lack of authentication in the local dealers portal, Indane is leaking the names, addresses and the Aadhaar numbers of their customers," he wrote in the blog post.

However, Indian Oil denied the claims saying that the company in its software captures only the Aadhaar number which is required for LPG subsidy transfer.

"No other Aadhaar related details are captured by IndianOil. Therefore, leakage of Aadhaar data is not possible through us," IndianOil said in a statement.

"In the past, oil marketing companies on time to time basis were hosting the consumption of subsidised LPG refills by customers, multiple connections list having customer information like customer number, name LPG id, and address, in public domain (transparency portal) in their respective websites which was available for social audits. There is no Aadhaar number hosted on this website," the statement added.

Meanwhile, Indian Oil Corporation has signed a 1.5 billion dollar deal to buy oil from the United States in an effort to reduce dependence on traditional suppliers.

“Indian Oil has finalised a term contract for import of up to 3 million tonnes of crude oil of US origin grades as a part of its strategy to diversify term crude sources,” the company said in a statement.

“This is the first term contract finalised by any Indian PSU oil company for import of US-origin crude oil grades,” it said on Monday, a day before the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia begins his India visit.

The approximate value of the contract beginning April works out to 1.5 billion dollars. The contract was finalised on February 15, said Indian Oil.
Government-owned refiners have purchased US oil earlier in the spot market. Indian Oil's annual purchase agreement signals a firm entry for the United States into India’s suppliers club.
