In an effort to push India towards a gas-based economy, the state-owned Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) on Wednesday launched a prepaid smart card for owners of CNG cars, commercial vehicles and fleet owners, which they can use for an easy and smooth transaction of fuel at IGL’s refueling stations.

The development is expected to save transaction time at CNG stations, which often see long queues of vehicles for refueling.

The initiative has first been introduced in Delhi and its surrounding regions. PNG will also be included on similar lines later with the introduction of pre-paid cards for it, wherein customers can use it like the way they recharge their pre-paid mobile card.

The government is toying with the idea of having a similar initiative for the supply of electricity, wherein the citizens can just recharge their pre-paid card and use the electricity.

On the initiative, minister of petroleum and natural gas Dharmendra Pradhan said answer to Delhi’s pollution lies in migrating its power plants, industrial units besides domestic and transport usage to clean fuel.

The IGL officials said fleet operators, government departments, schools, institutions as well as corporates could greatly benefit from it.
