Some 40 lakh jobs will be carved out in the country as the National Digital Communications Policy (NDCP) 2018 is rolled out over the next four years, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has announced.

The new policy, approved by the Cabinet on Wednesday with the aim to deepen high-speed broadband penetration across the nation, will also reskill another 10 lakh people, so they are abreast of developments on the cutting edge of tech. The new tech comprises 5G, artificial intelligence, machine-to-machine connections and internet of things.

These are the areas that will raise new employment opportunities, such as managing WiFi hotspots, laying optical fibre cables and providing last-mile connectivity. By the time the policy is fully implemented, institutions in gram panchayats – from educational to postal to police — will be internet-enabled.

The policy’s biggest beneficiary will be consumers, who’d be able to surf and exchange data at broadband speeds of 50 mbps. Consistently high Internet speed is a must, what with proliferation of data services and 10 million new users expected to be added by next year. It is also a prerequisite for the government’s flagship Digital India programme, which aims to reach every corner of the country.

Mayur Saraswat, from online recruiting firm TeamLease Services, said NDCP would create a lot of infrastructure and help the debt-ridden telecom sector. “Six lakh villages will be connected with Internet, which will generate a lot of earning avenues. Question is, how well will the NDCP be executed.”
