The Delhi government has decided to make fresh allotment of tomato sheds at the wholesale Azadpur Mandi here, inviting protests by a section of traders.

According to a notice issued by the government on July 25, fresh allotment of tomato sheds will be made based on market fee deposited by individual commission agents during the last three financial years--2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17.

"The allotment of tomato sheds will be made on a temporary basis till the new market committee is constituted.

"A sub-committee consisting of at least four members will be constituted for allotment of tomato sheds to commission agents," it stated.

A section of tomato traders has threatened to go on strike from Monday following the move.

Two sections of growers at the Azadpur Mandi have been accusing each other of "illegal" possession of tomato sheds.

Some of them have also been sitting on a dharna at the market since the past seven days.

An official said that the new allotment of tomato sheds will be done on the pattern of allotment made for potatoes and onions at the mandi.

Tomato prices have risen to around Rs 100 per kg in the national capital market as supplies from major producing states have been disrupted because of heavy rains.
